The Dover Boat

Couldn't find much on TV!...watched Drew...then PBS Roy Oberson...now Mariah Carey....on some show...

In reading again about the Boat Beneath the Pyramid...the book of that title is a real favorite!...I discovered the Dover Boat...a little boat found in England that is as old as the Pyramid boat ...and they both used the same Bronze age boat building technology...they were made of wooden planks that were sewn and tied together...brb....

here's a youTube on how the boats are made...really good!...

When I happened on the Pyramid Boat story, I was deeply, and I mean deeply, disturbed that I had never heard of it before. I'd read Nat Geo all my life...all kinds of magazines...and took as keen an interest in the Pyramids as anyone...
Egypt study has two levels...in the first one thinks it's all kinda cartoonish...the stiff paintings..and primitively mad...all those big stone monuments and mummies..."superbly preserved" the narrator says of the boat!...and it's that!...that craftsmanship of the ancient Egyptians...in all things they made...that takes one to a second level...perceiving that I mean...it's like looking at something that resembles a child's comic book...and then suddenly realizing it's so well made and not the least childlike!

There MUST be a technological connection between the Dover Boat and the Egyptian Boat..."they share planks...sewn together" ...the Egyptian boat is a natural off shoot of making boats by tying reeds together...like Thorydahl in the Ra Expedition...."twisted branches of yew of willow" ..."it's much more rigid than we would have thought"....that thought is interesting...it was thought that the Pyramid Boat was just for looks...being too flimsy with tied together planks to float about much...but in fact this construction technique works well!...lemego look up some more on this...brb...

Sat Nite Live on now...

This found searching the blogs with dover boat...there's a lot!

It was found during highway building, which couldn't be postponed, and half of it or more is now under the new highway!

And here...for goodness sake...is the sad tale of the preservation effort to exhibit the Pyramid Boat...sigh...I have this beautiful mind picture of it from the book I read...the cedar smell...the reflections in the polished wood...

“The new Great Pyramid would be a very efficient cemetery. It would have a huge capacity. A 150m-high pyramid could contain five million stones, it would be the size of six football fields and millions of people could be buried there.”

That...that's just bizaar...and this one about the Japanese pyramid city I posted before...

The plank canoe, or Tomol, was eight to thirty feet long made of driftwood or redwood....each plank was fastened to the one below by drilling holes on each side of the seam and tying the boards together with plant fiber string made from Indian hemp.

The Inca's did this too, using balsa wood, and too up at Lake Titicaca they made reed boats...the simplest just a pointed bundle one layed on...brb...sheesh..here's a better site...and these Indians really knew how to make a canoe!

brb...I glued..stitched!..together search "tomol dover boat"...nothing..."tomol egypt boat" search brings up this thread..which starts out with interesting bit about a tooth...and ends with a conjecture that Peru has side by sides with Egypt..cotton and reed boats!

brb...

And here's a cool "side by side" site going over just where the inhabitants of the New World...the Americas...came from...

Are the pyramids found in various areas of the world of a common origin? An Egyptian origin? Bancroft and Garcia y Cubas believed that the pyramids in the Americas and those in Egypt were associated with each other. Cubas wrote: “The site (for the pyramids) …is the same; the structures are oriented with slight variation; the line through the center of the pyramids is in the ‘astronomical meridian’; the construction in grades and steps is the same; in both cases the larger pyramids are dedicated to the sun; (Egypt) has a ‘valley of the dead’, as at Teotihuacan there is a ‘street of the dead’…the smaller mounds are of the same nature and for the same purpose; both pyramids have a small mound formed to one of their faces; the openings discovered in the Pyramid of the Moon are also found in some Egyptian pyramids; the interior arrangement of the pyramids is analogous.” (24)

Gordon offers another piece of curious evidence for Hebraic expedition to America: “…On a stela from Campeche, Mexico, a man wearing a reedboat hat has an earplug with the Star of David. The Star of David first appears in Palestine at Megiddo in a Solomic context.” (34) Gordon suggests that the reed-boat represents an important navigator. The Hebrew merchant-ships, while made up almost entirely of Phoenician crew members, undoubtedly were commanded by Hebrew officers.
