Hypatia

Remake of movie Shaft was on...people shooting people, cars crashing cars...they are all like that!..CSI is on now...."going to get some love from the Feds"...I dooont knnnowww!....

But I thought about superstition today...and wondered if the NASA engineers had lucky charms during Apollo....brb...oh..this is funny...and too long a snag...it's not being easy to connect superstition to the astronauts!...

THE REAL REASON THEY STOPPED THE APOLLO MOON LANDINGS
Who will be the next person to set foot on the Moon? That's actually an easy question to answer, that person will be . . . . the thirteenth person to set foot on the Moon. With the bad luck of Apollo 13, and the superstitious character of most of the old military flyers that made up the astronaut corps, maybe they just couldn't get anyone to be the thirteenth person to set foot on the Moon. Who would want to go through life being known as the hard luck thirteenth person to set foot on the Moon? So, here's the solution, we modify the lunar lander to carry three persons, the commander, the pilot, and a celebrity guest astronaut. The commander of course will be scheduled to step out first to become that fateful thirteenth, but, when the door is opened the commander and the pilot grab the celebrity guest astronaut and throw him out first to become the thirteenth. We'll need a celebrity that everybody finds irritating already, I suggest Martin Short or Pauly Shore.

brb...I really need to find a 'scientist' who is superstitious...

Space disasters attract so much public attention and often involve such complex and subtle sequences of events that there’s an entire Internet literature of “crackpot causes” on par with JFK assassination myths.

Yes...there's Nazis in the attic...and an alien in the basement..."Dark Mission" is another Hoagland book...about a conspiracy of failures to hide discoveries of alien artifacts on Mars..the Moon...and elsewhere...but still not a superstitious scientist...which is I suspect one of those oxymorons...brb...ah...

It is the first time NASA has had to replace any crew members since the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970. For superstitious reasons, Endeavours's mission number 113 has been converted into the roman numerals CXIII on the official mission insignia.

Indian Superstition Equivalent to Modern Geology 10/10/2000Exclusive A roadside interpretive sign along the Wahweap Marina road at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area states that Native American tribal beliefs about the origin of a nearby mountain are similar to what geologists believe today. Quote: “Black Body, Blue Body, First Man, and First Woman built Navajo Mountain with soil brought from the underworld. The Navajo creation story coincides with geologic evidence. Heaved up within the mountain is a core of solidified lava.”
We could have a little fun with this comparison, but will refrain. Actually, this is more than a peace pipe for the nearby Navajos. The National Park Service has become a missionary agency, promoting Indian superstitions with evangelistic fervor. This reporter saw a trail guide at Lava Beds National Monument actually encouraging tourists on a nature trail to experience the spirits in the trees and animals, and make a votive offering at a sacred tree. Everywhere you go, tribal beliefs and customs are depicted in glowing terms as flutes and drums play over the intercoms of the visitor centers. It is one thing to describe what Indian tribes believe, it is quite another to promote it. If the whole truth were told, it would be apparent that tribal superstitions have hindered our understanding of nature (see
The World’s Greatest Creation Scientists at this site). Christian beliefs, which did promote scientific investigation of natural laws, are never given equal time; in fact, they are often unfairly depicted as being responsible for destruction of the environment.Update 11/10/2000 A slide show currently playing in Saguaro National Park near Tucson, Arizona is almost 100% Indian evangelism. Two recorded Native American narrators are given the whole show to plug their tribe’s pantheistic belief in the connectedness of all things and the spirituality of nature.

but no nasa...brb...well...this is a find...(web searchs are like priming a farm house kitchen sink pump)...and from a NASA site...

Explanation: Sixteen hundred years ago, Hypatia became one of the world's leading scholars in mathematics and astronomy. Hypatia's legendary knowledge, modesty, and public speaking ability flourished during the era of the Great Library of Alexandria. Hypatia is credited with contributions to geometry and astrometry, and she is thought instrumental in the development of the sky-measuring astrolabe. "Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all," Hypatia is credited with saying. "To teach superstitions as truth is a most terrible thing."

Some managers insist on wearing special clothes. During the Apollo era, the Lunar Orbiter program manager, Lee R. Scherer, always wore the same sport coat, said Hugh W. Harris, a retired public affairs chief at the Kennedy Space Center here. When the program ended, Mr. Scherer shredded the coat and distributed pieces among co-workers.

The Russian astronauts have another ritual: urinating against a tire of the bus taking them to the launching pad. They are commemorating the first man in space, Yuri A. Gagarin, by replicating his urgent deed before his launching in 1961.
